Venturing into a new neighborhood often leads to unexpected discoveries, and in Queens, NY, one such serendipitous find was Mean Street Tattoo. While exploring College Point Boulevard, the words “tattoo parlor” caught my eye – an almost magnetic pull for anyone immersed in the world of ink. My girlfriend, equally enthusiastic about tattoo art, readily agreed to stop and explore Mean Street Tattoo Studio, a shop we later learned was named after the Van Halen classic, “Mean Street.”
Walking into Mean Street Tattoo, located at 1846 College Point Boulevard, the first impression is one of immaculate cleanliness contrasting with a distinctly Asian-inspired décor. Far from the overwhelming flash art often found in tattoo shops, the interior evoked a sense of calm and order, reminiscent of a well-kept home with an Eastern aesthetic. This unique ambiance suggests a focus on detail and a departure from the typical tattoo shop environment.
Although this visit was unannounced, providing no opportunity for a formal interview with the owner, I had the pleasure of speaking with Johann Florendo, a talented artist at Mean Street Tattoo. Keen to experience the shop authentically, I didn’t disclose my writing background and observed the interaction as any customer would. It was immediately clear that ego has no place here; Johann was approachable, friendly, and genuinely interested in his craft.
Johann shared that Mean Street Tattoo is home to another artist, Tommy Murphy. Tommy tattoos regularly, except on Sundays and Tuesdays when the shop is closed or he is off. While Tommy prefers appointments, he may accommodate walk-ins when available. Johann, on the other hand, operates strictly by appointment, a testament to the demand for his artistic skills. Mean Street Tattoo welcomes clients from Monday through Saturday, maintaining consistent hours of 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., aligning with the typical schedule of many tattoo studios.

Mean Street Tattoo operates as a custom shop, encouraging clients to bring their own tattoo ideas and inspirations. However, Johann and Tommy are also adept at creating original designs, demonstrating their versatility and artistic expertise. They prioritize client consultation, ensuring that each tattoo is a collaborative process that meets the individual’s vision and needs. Furthermore, Mean Street Tattoo maintains a strict policy of using autoclave sterilization for all needles, underscoring their commitment to client safety and hygiene. Adhering to legal standards, the shop requires all customers to be 18 years of age or older and possess valid identification. This commitment to professionalism and client well-being makes Mean Street Tattoo a noteworthy destination for those seeking quality tattoo art in College Point and the wider Queens area.
