Experience the Unforgettable Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo

Edinburgh, a city steeped in history and brimming with culture, becomes even more vibrant each August when it hosts the spectacular Royal Military Tattoo. This isn’t just any show; it’s a dazzling display of military precision, musical artistry, and Scottish tradition set against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Having experienced this event firsthand, I can confidently say it’s an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Edinburgh during this time.

For a truly premium experience, consider the Jacobite Package. While it represents a higher investment, the value is undeniable. Our evening began with an exclusive three-course dinner within the castle itself. Imagine dining in such a historic setting, accompanied by a dram of fine Scotch whisky and a traditional bagpiper welcome – it’s an atmosphere that’s both elegant and uniquely Scottish. Following dinner, we were personally escorted through a procession of bagpipers, their music echoing “Scotland the Brave,” leading us down to the esplanade and our reserved seats. This seamless transition and privileged access alone are worth considering the package. The memory of that procession remains a highlight of my travels.

Regarding seating, the stands are arranged in a U-shape, offering various perspectives. The most sought-after and pricier seats are positioned at the base of the U, providing a direct, head-on view of Edinburgh Castle. Our seats were located midway up one of the sides, and they were fantastic, offering a comprehensive view of the performance and the castle panorama. Regardless of your seat choice, be prepared for the Scottish weather. Even in August, evenings can turn chilly, and rain is always a possibility. Bringing a coat or raincoat is essential. Blankets and seat cushions are available for rent, but umbrellas are not permitted within the venue. The dedication of the performers is unwavering – the show continues rain or shine, adding to its unique character.

One of the significant advantages of the dinner package is the early access and seamless entry. Instead of joining the general public queue, we checked in at a designated area at 4 pm and were escorted directly to the castle dining room. This not only saved considerable time but also added to the feeling of a special, curated experience. Like the show seating, dinner seating is also pre-assigned and reserved.

To reach Edinburgh Castle, be prepared for a walk up the historic Royal Mile. During August, this iconic street transforms into a pedestrian paradise, closed to cars and buses, becoming a lively thoroughfare filled with street performers and buskers due to the concurrent Fringe Festival. Expect crowds, as August is peak season in Edinburgh, largely due to the Fringe Festival, the International Festival, the Book Festival, and, of course, the Royal Military Tattoo. While hotel prices are higher during this period, embracing these festivals is part of the Edinburgh August experience. Attending a Fringe show or two is highly recommended to fully immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Remember to pack rain gear – it’s practically a travel essential for Edinburgh, especially in August!
