Discovering the Path to Tribal Tattoo Artistry

Aivaras’s entry into the tattoo industry was somewhat unconventional. Unlike many artists who nurture a lifelong passion for art, his initial interests lay elsewhere, primarily in sports. It wasn’t until his late teens that tattoos piqued his curiosity. Recalling this transformative period, Aivaras shares, “Until my late teens I had no interest in tattoos or art in general. I was more into sports.” The pivotal moment came after high school when, feeling uncertain about his future, he decided to get his first tattoo. This experience ignited an unexpected and profound passion. “After that, something happened that I can’t explain, but all I could think of was tattoos,” he explains.

This newfound obsession led him to an impulsive decision. He sold a car, a gift intended for a conventional “adult” life, to fund his transformation into a canvas of ink. Within months, he had both sleeves and his entire front tattooed. This bold move, while perhaps surprising to his family, marked the beginning of his deep dive into the tattoo world. Around 2006-2007, during a summer job in the US, the desire to create tattoos himself took root. He acquired tattoo machines and, upon returning home, practiced tattooing on himself for nearly two weeks. Driven and self-taught, he approached a local tattoo shop, showcasing his self-made tattoos and seeking guidance.

Impressed by his determination, the shop offered him an apprenticeship. This marked the formal start of his career. He further refined his skills under the mentorship of an artist known as “Rokadze,” who helped him embark on his true artistic journey around 2008. Reflecting on his journey, Aivaras notes, “So I’ve been tattooing for 13 years so far,” highlighting his extensive experience in the craft of tribal tattoos and beyond.

The Organic Development of Artistic Language

When asked about the development of his personal artistic language, Haivarasly offers a humble perspective. He states, “I never thought about it. I have always tried to do my best and still doing the same, so I guess if there’s one, then it happened by itself.” This organic evolution is attributed to his continuous pursuit of excellence and his personal growth through various experiences. Techniques Rooted in Boldness and Precision

Technically, Haivarasly is renowned for his bold lines and solid blackwork, hallmarks of many striking tribal tattoo styles. “Bold lines are what I like to do the most, if the person I am tattooing also feels the same,” he states. This preference for bold, decisive lines aligns perfectly with the visual impact and enduring quality often associated with tribal tattoos. While bold lines are his signature, he is also adept at using various needle groupings and techniques to cater to client requests and to ensure the best outcome for each unique tattoo. The Meaning Behind Deep Blackwork in Tribal Tattoos

The deep, intense black that characterizes Haivarasly’s tribal tattoos is not merely a stylistic choice but a deliberate element that enhances the visual and symbolic weight of his work. He views the tattoo as a representation of the wearer, embodying their personal meanings, emotions, and inner self. “The work that is done, represents the person who wears it and has a personal meaning, feeling, different states of mind, expression of inner self,” he explains. The technical execution, particularly the solid blackwork, is integral to this representation. Haivarasly believes that well-executed, solid tattoos possess a strong visual presence, being “readable also from a distance and has a strong impact when you see it in real.” This bold aesthetic, while not universally appealing, resonates deeply with those drawn to the powerful visual language of tribal tattoos.
