People are often curious about the story behind their tattoo artist, and I’m happy to share mine. It might not be the most thrilling tale, but it’s my path into the world of ink. If you’re short on time, feel free to skip ahead to my portfolio – the pictures speak for themselves!
My interest in tattooing really sparked in my late twenties. I was stuck in a draining graphic and print shop job in Boston. My boss was, shall we say, incredibly demotivating. You know, the kind of person who makes you consider extreme career changes – or maybe just jumping off a bridge a few times a day! Looking back, that intense negativity might have been the push I needed to find something truly fulfilling. Sometimes, those challenging figures in our lives, as much as they frustrate us, are the catalysts for positive change.
So, I began my journey into body art as an apprentice at a fantastic little studio in Cambridge, MA. As the newbie, I did my share of the less glamorous tasks – scrubbing toilets, mopping floors – but the camaraderie and genuine friendship I found with the other artists made it all worthwhile, transforming it into something special. Once I earned my license and became a fully-fledged artist, I ventured out and worked at a few different shops. This exploration eventually led me to opening Salem Ink + Art Gallery in 2011 with my husband, Mark.
Around that time, perhaps a bit later in life than the average person (especially for a gay man!), I decided to return to education at Montserrat College of Art. My relationship with school was complicated, leaning towards dislike at times – that’s just my personality! – but I persevered and earned my BFA. More importantly, I made some incredible friends and even a few amazing frenemies who provide endless witty banter and entertainment.
So, that’s a little about me. Honestly, I’m still evolving and figuring things out, but I’m genuinely enjoying the process. If you appreciate my style, please come visit me. If my work isn’t quite what you’re looking for, Salem Ink is home to many talented artists, and I’d be happy to point you in the right direction.
