Surrealism Tattoo Art: Discover the Darkly Beautiful World of Marco Gruschwitz

Marco’s entry into the tattoo scene was sparked by friendship and admiration. He developed a close bond with his own tattoo artist, Marcel (@fxhq_tattooer), and began assisting him at conventions. Immersed in the vibrant and creative atmosphere, Marco was inspired. “I was overwhelmed by the kindness and creativity of the people there,” he recalls. “I think that was contagious!” Surprisingly, Marco hadn’t drawn before this experience, but the spark ignited a passion, leading him to dedicate himself to drawing every day.

Inspiration for Marco’s surrealism tattoo art is multifaceted, drawn from a rich tapestry of sources. Video games like ‘Bloodborne’ and the ‘Souls’ series are significant influences, contributing to the dark and often haunting aesthetic found in his work. Dark cinema, citing films such as ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Shutter Island,’ also plays a crucial role in shaping his artistic vision. However, inspiration isn’t confined to the digital or cinematic; Marco finds profound creative fuel in the tranquility of nature. “Taking long walks in a park or at the river in Dresden… I think that’s where I get the most ideas for my designs,” he explains. This blend of dark fantasy and natural elements is a hallmark of his surrealism tattoo style.

When asked to describe his unique style to someone unfamiliar with tattoo terminology, Marco succinctly labels it “Surreal Blackwork.” This description captures the essence of his art: a fusion of surrealist concepts rendered meticulously in black ink. He elaborates, “There is a lot of Traditional foundation in it since I started with Old School tattoos and I still like them.” This foundation evolved into a style emphasizing stark contrasts and defined shapes, incorporating tribal elements into his surreal compositions. Surrealism tattoos, in their nature, often defy reality, blending disparate elements into dreamlike, sometimes unsettling, yet always captivating imagery. Marco’s interpretation masterfully marries this surreal aesthetic with the bold impact of blackwork.

One notable project that exemplifies Marco’s embrace of the uncanny was his tribute to Ari Aster’s film ‘Midsommar.’ Collaborating with photographer Jonas (@bookings_always_closed), Marco brought to life the film’s unsettling atmosphere through a photoshoot. “I wanted to transport a certain feeling to the viewer,” Marco states, aiming beyond mere aesthetic appeal to evoke a deep emotional response, mirroring the film’s disquieting mood. This project underscores his interest in exploring intense and complex emotions through his art, a common thread in surrealism tattoo.

Working across two distinct cities, Dresden and Berlin, provides Marco with varied creative environments. His studio in Dresden, formerly ‘Der Saloon’ and now rebranded as ‘Schutt & Asche’ (@dersaloontattoo), which translates to “rubble & ashes,” is envisioned as a hub for creativity in East Germany. Marco aims to cultivate “a welcoming creative scene” in Dresden, fostering a connected tattoo community and supporting emerging artists. He sees ‘Schutt & Asche’ as a space for “creative exchange” in a city where he feels the tattoo scene is still developing.

In contrast, ‘Der Grimm’ (@der_grimm_tattoo) in Berlin represents an already established, thriving creative space that has profoundly inspired Marco. He praises it as having “everything you could wish for as a tattooer” and appreciates his talented colleagues there. The dynamic Berlin environment provides a stimulating contrast to Dresden, keeping his perspective fresh and fueling his artistic energy. The constant interaction with highly skilled artists at ‘Der Grimm’ enriches his artistic growth, for which he expresses deep gratitude, especially towards Felix (@younghearted.tattoo).

Looking ahead, Marco’s schedule includes international engagements. He was set to attend ‘The Iron Gate Tattoo Convention’ (@theirongatetattooconvention) in Sydney in November, marking his first visit to Australia. This appearance highlights the growing international recognition of his unique surrealism tattoo style.
