Could you share a bit about your background, Luke?
Originally from Stephenville, Newfoundland, I currently call Sydney, Nova Scotia home. Here, I work at my tattoo studio, the 9th Gate Gallery. It’s where I bring my sticker tattoo ideas to life and collaborate with clients looking for unique, eye-catching designs.

How long have you been in the tattooing industry, and what’s your artistic journey been like?
I’ve been tattooing for 12 years. Drawing has been a lifelong passion, something I’ve done since childhood. Interestingly, I don’t have formal art training, which might be surprising to some given the detailed and realistic nature of my sticker tattoos. My approach is self-taught, evolving through practice and experimentation.

Your signature style is instantly recognizable. How did you develop this ‘sticker tattoo’ aesthetic?
It’s quite an evolution! For years, people would comment that my tattoos looked like stickers, and initially, I resisted that. I tried to move away from it. But eventually, I embraced it. I decided to lean into creating tattoos that genuinely look like stickers applied to the skin. The white border became a key element in achieving this sticker effect, and that’s how my distinctive sticker tattoo style was really born. It was a journey of accepting and enhancing what made my work unique.

How would you personally describe your tattoo style, and what inspires you?
I define my style as a fusion of new school and realism. My inspiration is heavily drawn from cartoons and pop culture. These elements allow me to create vibrant, dynamic, and relatable sticker tattoos. I’m also influenced by artists who are constantly pushing the boundaries of tattooing, experimenting with techniques and styles to innovate within the art form.

Can you elaborate on your technique and what makes you feel satisfied with a finished tattoo?
My technique is something that has developed over years, largely influenced by being around and learning from realism artists. It’s a constant learning process. I’m quite critical of my own work and never truly ‘satisfied’ in a final sense. I always see room for improvement and strive to make each new tattoo better than the last. However, I do feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness with a tattoo when I manage to capture a great photo of it – that visual validation is rewarding!

What is the tattoo scene like in Sydney, and your experience working there?
Sydney is a fantastic place to live and work; it’s peaceful and has a relaxed atmosphere. However, it’s not a major hub for tattooing, meaning there isn’t a large, bustling tattoo scene here. Because of this, I often travel to tattoo conventions and seek out opportunities to connect and collaborate with other tattoo artists. This travel is essential for staying connected with the broader tattoo community.

Tell us more about your studio, 9th Gate Gallery.
Humorously enough, my studio is located right next door to a Wal-Mart! It’s a street shop with a really energetic and welcoming vibe. I wanted to create a space that was both professional and fun, where clients feel comfortable and excited to get their sticker tattoos.

Beyond tattooing, what are your other passions?
Music is a huge part of my life. I genuinely couldn’t imagine life without it. I’ve been playing guitar since high school, and it’s a constant source of joy and creative outlet for me outside of tattooing.
