Getting a tattoo while traveling is a unique way to commemorate experiences and connect with local culture. For those seeking authentic Croatian artistry, a Lobster Tattoo might not be the first image to spring to mind. However, in Split, Croatia, Lobster Tattoo studio is a key destination for those in the know, offering not just incredible artwork but a genuine connection to tattoo traditions, albeit with an American traditional twist. This review delves into why Lobster Tattoo became the clear choice for a memorable ink experience in Croatia, and why a lobster tattoo β or any design from this studio β is worth considering.
Unearthing Croatian Tattoo Traditions at Lobster Tattoo
Many are surprised to learn about the rich, albeit lesser-known, tattoo heritage of Southern Croatia and Bulgaria. Even within Croatia, traditional tattooing practices are not widely publicized. My research into local styles led me to only a couple of artists keeping these traditions alive in some form.
One such artist is Melissa from Melrose Studio, who expertly practices both traditional style and method (stick and poke). Unfortunately for those in Croatia, Melissa is based in Paris.

The other prominent name that consistently surfaced was George of Lobster Tattoo in Split. While George specializes in the bold lines and striking imagery of American traditional tattoos, his deep passion for the history of tattooing and his exceptional skill have made him a sought-after artist in Croatia, particularly for those interested in high-quality, traditional-style work, even if not strictly Croatian in origin.

And the reputation is well-deserved. Asking around Croatia about traditional tattoos often resulted in either blank stares or directions towards Split. Once in Split, the recommendation was unanimous: George at Lobster Tattoo.

Located just outside the bustling center of Split at Plinarska Ul. 1, Lobster Tattoo is owned and operated by George, originally from Cyprus. This intimate studio is a collaborative space shared by George and Leo, a talented young Croatian tattoo artist.
Both artists are masters of the American traditional style, known for its bold outlines and vibrant colors. However, their artistic versatility extends beyond this specialization. The studio operates primarily on a walk-in basis and tends to be busy, a testament to their popularity and skill.
Pricing at Lobster Tattoo is per piece rather than hourly, with a starting price of 500 Kuna (approximately 67 Euros or 78 USD). The final cost depends on factors such as size, complexity, and materials used.
The Perks of Getting Inked at Lobster Tattoo

Stepping into Lobster Tattoo offers immediate respite from the Croatian heat. The air-conditioned studio, maintained at a comfortable 20-24 degrees Celsius (68-75 Fahrenheit), provides a welcome escape.
George and Leo are exceptionally hospitable. They create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, offering cigarettes during breaks and readily offering to fetch snacks or drinks for their clients. This genuine care extends to sharing food, creating a truly friendly and comfortable environment.
Cleanliness is paramount at Lobster Tattoo. The studioβs immaculate condition immediately inspires confidence and comfort, crucial when undergoing a tattooing procedure. Music fills the studio, played either through internet radio or a vintage turntable, adding to the jovial atmosphere and easy conversation between artists and clients.
Both George and Leo are known for their skillful and gentle touch. Their expertise minimizes pain during the tattooing process, making the experience more comfortable for clients.
A Minor Drawback: Popularity
The only slight downside to Lobster Tattoo is its popularity. Being a sought-after studio, it can get quite busy, which may impact immediate availability.
Their walk-in appointment system, while convenient for spontaneous decisions, means that securing a tattoo on a specific day might be challenging. If they are fully booked, they will provide an estimated return time, but even then, delays can occur if the studio remains busy.
The Quirky Bathroom Situation
During my multiple visits, the only slightly βuglyβ aspect I encountered was a minor, easily fixable detail: the bathroom lock.
The small bathroom, tucked under the stairs, has a lamp for lighting and a sliding door with a simple hook closure that might require some maneuvering to secure.
This is a very minor issue, easily resolved with a small latch. Knowing Georgeβs attentiveness, itβs likely been addressed since my visit.
My Verdict on Lobster Tattoo

Lobster Tattoo ranks among the top tattoo studios Iβve experienced. The studio is exceptionally clean with a fantastic vibe. George and Leo are incredibly welcoming, fostering a desire to linger and chat even after the tattooing is complete. They readily accommodated my requests to photograph and film their work, always ensuring client consent.
Georgeβs mastery is evident. He is knowledgeable about both traditional Croatian tattoo elements and American traditional styles. His lines are impeccable, demonstrating pride and dedication to his craft. For my hand tattoo, he worked meticulously, taking necessary breaks and applying precise pressure. The result was a surprisingly painless experience with minimal bleeding.
George provided clear and simple aftercare instructions, emphasizing avoiding swimming in the sea, given the coastal location. He often advises clients to schedule tattoos towards the end of their trip to facilitate proper aftercare.
