Meet Anastazia: A Pittsburgh Tattoo Artist Blending Fine Art with Ink

Anastazia, an artist hailing from Western Pennsylvania and proud to call Pittsburgh home, has been making her mark at Blood Eagle Tattoo since 2015. Under the mentorship of Erin and Amber Lambert, she honed her skills and embraced tattooing as her primary artistic medium after joining their studio as an apprentice shortly after graduating high school. Recognizing her artistic drive, Erin and Amber introduced her to the world of tattoos, a medium that quickly became her passion and a challenging canvas for her creative heart.

Before diving into the tattoo world, Anastazia’s artistic interests were deeply rooted in realism. Charcoal portraits and still life were her initial loves. A formative trip to Poland at sixteen broadened her horizons, igniting a passion for travel and a desire to capture the beauty she observed. Photography from her travels became the basis for acrylic paintings of cityscapes and architecture. This exploration expanded to oil portraits and even ceramics. However, tattooing eventually captured her focus and has remained her artistic dedication for nearly a decade.

Working in a custom tattoo studio, Anastazia thrives on creatively translating client visions into unique designs. Each tattoo reflects her evolving artistic perspective. Tattooing allows her to explore graphic design across a spectrum of styles, from bold traditional pieces to delicate fine line illustrations. Technically demanding tattoos are particularly rewarding for her. Nature serves as a constant source of inspiration. She finds beauty in bark patterns, the intricate arrangement of leaves on moss, and the textures of lichen-covered stones, often seen vividly on tombstones. The duality of life and death is a recurring theme in her work, expressed through imagery like bones and flowers – a relatable concept for many. Her versatility is evident in her willingness to tattoo both a striking blackwork mace and a delicate fine line cluster of baby’s breath. Antique artifacts also fascinate her; the detailed ironwork of fences, Baroque and Gothic architectural elements rendered in pen and ink with contrasting brush strokes all spark her imagination for tattoo designs. Victorian and Art Nouveau vases, glassware, and décor are particularly exquisite to her eye.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, music is central to Anastazia’s life. She frequently travels across Europe and Scandinavia to attend concerts, seeing multiple live music shows each month, both locally and further afield. Live music is her essential outlet. Growing up, her parents introduced her to a wide range of genres, from rock’n’roll and punk to country and oldies, shaping her diverse musical taste. Her love for travel endures, and in her free time, she enjoys visiting family and cultivating beauty in her home and garden, finding home design to be another fulfilling artistic outlet.
