The Allure of San Francisco and Black Serum Tattoo

When asked about what drew her to San Francisco, Mimi-Sama explains a confluence of factors. “San Francisco appealed to me for several compelling reasons. Foremost, my connection with Brucius Xylander, the visionary owner of Black Serum Tattoo, which you can find on Instagram @blkserum, began a few years prior. I deeply admired his philosophy and the inspiring studio environment he had cultivated. Secondly, the city itself is incredibly attractive. San Francisco is a dynamic hub of culture and innovation, a place where many of our era’s transformative movements originate. The favorable climate, welcoming community, and breathtaking scenery of the city and its surroundings were also major draws.” These elements combined made San Francisco and Black Serum Tattoo the perfect setting for Mimi-Sama’s artistic growth.

Inside Black Serum Tattoo: A Hub of Artistic Inspiration

Describing the studio atmosphere, Mimi-Sama paints a picture of creative energy. “Black Serum Tattoo has expanded since my initial visit, yet it has steadfastly maintained its core value: art is central to everything. Brucius ensures the space remains engaging and inspiring for everyone who walks through the door, showcasing a diverse collection of art and handcrafted objects. Tokyo’s Influence: Shaping Artistic Identity Before Black Serum

Reflecting on her experiences as a travelling artist, Mimi-Sama emphasizes the profound impact of her time in Tokyo. “I spent nearly a year working in Tokyo in 2019 at the esteemed Ichi Tattoo studio. Living and working there had a definitive and lasting influence on my artistic trajectory. Immersing myself in Japanese pop culture was incredibly inspiring, and it significantly bolstered my confidence in my unique style and artistic vision. It was an extraordinary period in my life, shared with my family who accompanied me.” This experience in Tokyo proved formative before her settling down at Black Serum Tattoo.

Despite societal perceptions of tattoos in Japan, Mimi-Sama acknowledges her fortunate position. “Tattoo artists and tattoos, in general, are not widely accepted within Japanese society. Therefore, I felt incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to tattoo there, especially within one of the city’s top studios. This experience was instrumental in refining both my tattooing technique and artistic approach,” showcasing the valuable skills and perspectives she gained before joining Black Serum Tattoo.

Navigating the Pandemic and Fostering Creativity at Black Serum Tattoo

Discussing the pandemic’s impact, Mimi-Sama shares a balanced perspective. “Yes, the pandemic undeniably affected my work. The numerous tattoo convention cancellations resulted in substantial financial losses, and reimbursements proved challenging. However, it’s important to acknowledge that everyone has faced hardships during this time, and I recognize the broader impact. The studio where I was working also had to close for several months. I prefer not to dwell on complaints, as these challenges were universally experienced.”

Paradoxically, the lockdowns fostered unexpected creative growth. “Regarding my creativity, I believe the pandemic ultimately had a positive influence. I tend to be a workaholic, often neglecting personal time outside of tattooing. The lockdowns provided a valuable opportunity to spend more quality time with my family, delve deeper into research on Japanese art – my primary source of inspiration – and, of course, immerse myself in mangas and anime!” This period of reflection and exploration enriched her artistic foundation, contributing to her work at Black Serum Tattoo.

Artistic Evolution and Blackwork Refinement at Black Serum Tattoo

Mimi-Sama confirms the evolution of her style since our last conversation. “Yes, definitely! The change of environment and a more settled lifestyle have allowed me to concentrate more intensely on refining my technique at Black Serum Tattoo. I can confidently say that I’ve achieved a higher level of proficiency in blackwork techniques, particularly in areas like whipping and dotting. My ability to manipulate different textures and manage light contrast has significantly progressed.” This dedication to honing her craft is evident in her increasingly sophisticated blackwork tattoos created at Black Serum Tattoo.

Tool adjustments have also played a role in her artistic development. “I’ve also made changes to my equipment, including my machine and needles. I’m now capable of working with finer needles to achieve remarkable detail, even in healed tattoos, as demonstrated in this Totoro piece,” showcasing her commitment to precision and lasting quality in her black serum tattoo work.

Manga Tattoo Aspirations: Gunnm and Dorohedoro at Black Serum Tattoo

Discussing manga characters she is eager to tattoo, Mimi-Sama reveals a long-held aspiration. “I am particularly enthusiastic about undertaking some Gunnm tattoo projects. Gunnm was the first manga series I connected with as a teenager, and I haven’t yet had the chance to translate it into a tattoo. However, I am generally very pleased with the diversity of projects I get to work on. While I would love to tattoo more characters from Dorohedoro, as its aesthetic aligns perfectly with my style!” This passion for specific manga series fuels her creative drive at Black Serum Tattoo.

Embracing the Mangala Style: A Unique Fusion at Black Serum Tattoo

Mimi-Sama confirms her ongoing passion for her signature style. “It absolutely still excites me. I am continuously striving to inject more of my personal artistic voice into my creations. This ambition led to the development of my ‘Mangala’ concept, which is a fusion of manga and mandala elements. I am deeply drawn to graphic blackwork and am committed to further exploring this style in conjunction with my love for manga. I firmly believe this combination results in truly unique and compelling tattoo pieces,” defining her innovative approach at Black Serum Tattoo.

Personal Tattoo Story: Meaning, Joy, and Black Serum Tattoo

Sharing insights into her own tattoos, Mimi-Sama reflects on her personal journey. “Similar to many tattoo artists, my first tattoo is far from my best work! However, I still cherish it as it represents a part of my personal evolution. My favorite tattoo is a rabbit created by my dear friend Mademoiselle Hirondelle, whom you can find on Instagram @mademoiselle_hirondelle.”

This particular tattoo carries deep personal significance. “This tattoo embodies a very personal narrative, and she thoughtfully took the time to listen and design something that encapsulates that story. The entire process was incredibly cathartic for me, marking a significant moment in my life and permanently etched on my skin.”

Addressing the necessity of meaning in tattoos, Mimi-Sama offers a refreshing perspective. “Not at all! Sometimes, the best reason to get a tattoo is simply for the joy of it! When you attempt to imbue a tattoo with excessive emotion or meaning, those feelings can sometimes fade even before the tattoo itself does! While this isn’t always the case, I have observed it happen occasionally. In both life and my work at Black Serum Tattoo, I prioritize positivity and enjoyment. Therefore, I consistently advise people to approach their tattoo projects with positive and joyful anticipation.”

Motherhood and Tattooing: Balancing Life’s Art Forms at Black Serum Tattoo

Reflecting on motherhood and her profession, Mimi-Sama shares her daughter’s innocent view. “She is now four years old, and I don’t believe she perceives my work any differently from other professions. For her, the routine is simple: Mommy leaves in the morning and returns in the evening.”

Her daughter’s exposure to tattoos is normalized and playful. “She might show slightly more interest in temporary candy tattoos than other children, but that’s about it! She did go through a phase of enjoying drawing on herself, but that has passed,” illustrating a balanced perspective on tattooing within her family life.
