Diving Deeper into Rapture: My New BioShock Tattoo

As a content creator for tattooat.com, and a self-confessed devotee of ink inspired by the gaming world, I’m thrilled to share the story behind my latest piece – a Bioshock Tattoo that’s been years in the making, figuratively speaking! This marks my eleventh foray into video game-themed tattoos, and honestly, the passion only intensifies with each design. There’s something incredibly special about permanently marking your skin with art that represents the digital worlds and narratives that resonate deeply.

Before we delve into the mesmerizing world of Rapture on my right arm, let’s rewind briefly. My previous tattoo session, while undocumented on the blog (oops!), involved the stoic and brilliant Professor Mordin Solus from Mass Effect. Initially, my talented tattoo artist and I were brainstorming ideas around a Moxxi pin-up from Borderlands for my left arm. However, he astutely pointed out potential design conflicts with my existing Miranda Lawson tattoo. After some lively debate, Mordin emerged as the perfect compromise, and I couldn’t be happier with how he turned out.

The BioShock Revelation and a Gamer Gift

The pivotal moment that steered me towards a BioShock tattoo was a surprising revelation: my tattoo artist, despite his incredible artistry and casual gaming habits, had never experienced the underwater dystopia of Rapture! As a dedicated fan of the series, I was genuinely shocked. Seizing the opportunity, I gifted him “BioShock: The Collection” for PS4 as a Christmas present. He was genuinely touched that I remembered his gaming blind spot, and his gratitude sparked the idea for my next tattoo.

My only request in return for the BioShock gift? Original BioShock artwork, envisioned and inked onto my skin. Given that all my previous tattoos were directly inspired by in-game imagery, I wanted to give him complete creative freedom this time. When my next appointment rolled around, he unveiled a sketch that completely blew me away.

A Design Too Epic for One Arm: Embracing the BioShock Sleeve

The BioShock sketch was nothing short of breathtaking. The intricate details and dynamic composition were immediately captivating. However, the sheer scale of the design meant it wouldn’t comfortably fit on my already crowded left arm. Thus, the exciting decision was made to initiate a full right sleeve, dedicated to the atmospheric world of BioShock, while continuing to develop the left sleeve concurrently.

The initial tattooing session focused on the outline and foundational shading, taking a solid four hours to complete. Looking at the linework, I’m already ecstatic about this piece. The composition is rich with BioShock symbolism: a formidable Big Daddy standing protectively behind a Little Sister, who clutches a plush Big Daddy toy – a poignant detail that speaks volumes about their complex relationship. The delicate butterflies fluttering around the Little Sister add a touch of ethereal beauty and fragility to the scene. And then, there’s the inclusion of “Would You Kindly?” – the subtly manipulative phrase that is so central to BioShock’s narrative and themes of control and free will.

My artist already has a vibrant color palette in mind for this BioShock masterpiece, and I’m buzzing with anticipation to see it all come together. The final flourish will be a chain design wrapping around my wrist, anchoring the entire piece. My next appointment is eagerly awaited, and I can’t wait to witness the transformation as color breathes life into this Rapture-inspired artwork. If I haven’t sung my tattoo artist’s praises enough before, let me reiterate: his talent is phenomenal, and if you’re seeking a skilled and visionary artist, I wholeheartedly recommend following him on Instagram. Stay tuned for the next update, where I’ll reveal the completed BioShock tattoo and the vibrant colors that will bring Rapture to life on my skin!
