Mike Paquette, the heart and soul behind Aftershock Tattoo Co., isn’t your typical tattoo artist. His journey, deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for art, has cultivated Aftershock Tattoo into a leading studio in the Kansas City area. More than just a business, Aftershock Tattoo embodies a commitment to artistry, safety, and a welcoming environment that sets it apart in the tattoo industry.
From Art Class to Tattoo Machine: The Genesis of a Tattoo Artist
Mike’s artistic journey began in his childhood, nurtured by inspiring figures like his high school art teacher, Steve Tripp. Tripp’s encouragement to explore creative expression in any form resonated deeply with Mike, eventually leading him towards the world of tattooing. Inspired by peers who saw tattooing as a viable career path, Mike embarked on his own tattoo journey, marking his 18th birthday with his first tattoo in a Westport studio.
The initial steps weren’t without their stumbles. Navigating the early studio landscape presented challenges, but Mike’s determination remained unshaken. He honed his skills at a studio in Hanover, Pennsylvania, before returning to Kansas City and joining a studio in Overland Park. Seeking growth and opportunity, he transitioned to another studio just north of Kansas City, where he spent four years. However, consistent changes in ownership and conflicting visions spurred Mike to forge his own path.
In August 2000, armed with only $3000, Mike took a leap of faith. He secured a lease for a small building in downtown Overland Park and, by October 1st, Aftershock Tattoo was officially open at 82nd & Metcalf. Joined by a fellow artist and a body piercer, Mike laid the foundation for what would become a thriving and respected tattoo studio.

Building a Brand: Aftershock Tattoo’s Commitment to Excellence
The success of Aftershock Tattoo’s Overland Park location paved the way for expansion. Three years later, Mike opened a second studio in Olathe, Kansas. While the Olathe studio flourished, challenges resurfaced at the Overland Park location due to internal dishonesty. Taking decisive action, Mike consolidated operations, bringing a key artist to Olathe and closing the Overland Park studio.
For eight years, the Olathe location thrived, necessitating a move to a larger space just four blocks away. As Aftershock Tattoo approached its 20th anniversary, Mike envisioned a significant upgrade. Recognizing the dedication of his long-term team members, some with him for over a decade, Mike sought a new building in South Overland Park. This move marked a new chapter, allowing Aftershock Tattoo to house its team of five talented tattoo artists, a skilled body piercer, and soon-to-be-added brow and permanent makeup services.
Mike’s journey through various studios provided invaluable lessons. He learned from artists who fostered his growth and from studio owners who exemplified both best practices and pitfalls in business management. These experiences instilled in him the importance of loyalty, respect, and prioritizing the well-being of both artists and clients.
More Than Just a Tattoo Shop: The Aftershock Difference
When asked about the challenges he faced, Mike candidly acknowledges the demanding early years, marked by long hours and occasional setbacks. However, he emphasizes that every obstacle ultimately contributed to Aftershock Tattoo’s growth and refinement. This resilience and commitment to improvement are core to the Aftershock Tattoo ethos.
Aftershock Tattoo deliberately distinguishes itself from the stereotypical “tattoo shop.” Cleanliness and safety are paramount, exceeding state regulations with their own rigorous sanitation protocols. The studio prides itself on its versatility; rather than specializing in one style, the artists at Aftershock Tattoo are well-rounded, capable of executing a wide spectrum of tattoo styles to meet diverse client preferences.

Aftershock Tattoo’s commitment to professionalism is further underscored by its affiliations. They are members of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists (APT), with Mike himself serving as the Kansas State Representative. Their piercer is a member of the Association of Professional Piercers (APP). Furthermore, Aftershock Tattoo is recognized as an approved training facility by the Kansas State Board.
Despite his success and industry recognition, Mike remains grounded. He emphasizes his down-to-earth nature and strong family life, rejecting any notion of celebrity or superiority. This humility and genuine approach resonate with clients and contribute to the studio’s welcoming atmosphere.
