Experience the Thrill of the Chicago Tattoo Convention

For tattoo enthusiasts and artists alike, the Chicago Tattoo Convention by Villain Arts is an unmissable annual event. This weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend and immerse myself in the vibrant world of ink, artistry, and body modification. It wasn’t just a networking event for professionals; it was a thrilling experience for anyone passionate about tattoos. One of the highlights was undoubtedly meeting the exceptionally talented tattoo artist, Kelly Doty.

For those unfamiliar, Kelly Doty is a celebrated figure in the tattoo community, widely recognized for her unique style and captivating personality. She gained further prominence as a finalist on Ink Master, a television show that showcases the skills of tattoo artists. As a long-time admirer of tattoos and a collector myself, I’ve been a dedicated viewer of Ink Master since its inception. However, it was Kelly Doty’s artistry that truly captivated me. Her creativity and execution were so impressive that I eagerly anticipated each episode, wholeheartedly rooting for her victory. To be honest, her not winning felt like a bitter pill to swallow, as I genuinely believed her talent and artistry deserved the top title. Her work is, in my opinion, simply incredible. Upon learning that Kelly Doty would be gracing the Chicago convention, I knew I had to create something special for her – a Dead Girl Skullerfly Decay Barrette, directly inspired by her distinctive aesthetic.

When I finally had the chance to meet Kelly at the convention, I presented her with my handmade gift. Upon mentioning it was a barrette, her enthusiastic response, “Girl, you are speaking my language!” immediately broke the ice. She excitedly delved into the gift bag and her reaction was priceless. She adored the barrette so much that she dramatically removed a rose from her hair, jokingly dismissing it as a “stupid rose,” and instantly replaced it with my creation. Talking with Kelly was an absolute delight. When I expressed my admiration for her work, she gestured to the barrette now adorning her hair and reciprocated with, “I love your work.” As I bid farewell and thanked her for wearing my barrette right away, she playfully challenged, “try to stop me from wearing it!” This memorable encounter was captured in a photograph taken by a friend at her booth.

The day continued to exceed expectations as our own tattoo artist, Dave Togtman from Black Devil Tattoo, was also working at the Chicago Tattoo Convention. He had thoughtfully reserved time slots for both my partner, Frank, and me to get further ink work done.

Frank added to his impressive Beetlejuice-themed sleeve with a striking netherworld priest tattoo on his wrist. I, on the other hand, expanded my leg tattoo collection with a Neo Traditional style Captain Spaulding skull on my calf, placing it alongside my existing Baby Firefly pinup tattoo. The photos below showcase the fresh tattoos immediately after completion. Dave’s execution was flawless on both pieces, and we are absolutely thrilled with the results.

Adding to the day’s incredible experiences, Dave generously gifted us a stunning art piece that he had displayed at the show. This artwork is undoubtedly destined for a frame and a prominent spot in our home!
