What inspired you to get the tattoo?
Butch: My tattoo artist, Freddie Wadsworth from Silver Shamrock Tattoo, is a huge Dropkick Murphys fan. He knew about the “Rose Tattoo” song and the opportunity to be featured in the album art if you got a Dropkick Murphys rose tattoo. He asked if I was interested. Of course, I said yes!
Freddie contacted me and told me about the opportunity and asked if I wanted an awesome Dropkick Murphys tattoo. We were on a tight deadline, so we did it in two sessions. The first session was the outline and some shading to meet the submission deadline, and the second was a few weeks later for color.
I saw the design, but I didn’t realize it would be so big, covering most of my back! But I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s perfect. It’s a mix of the “Rose Tattoo,” an eagle, and bagpipes. It was my first band tattoo.
Do you have other band tattoos?
Butch: The only other band tattoo I have now is a Metallica star, which I got in memory of a friend who passed away.
When did you become a Dropkick Murphys fan?
Butch: I’ve been a fan for years. I remember listening to “The Gang’s All Here” in high school and collecting their albums ever since.
Besides “Rose Tattoo,” do you have other favorite songs?
Butch: I love the album “Sing Loud, Sing Proud!” Many of those songs are just great drinking songs. I love how Dropkick Murphys puts their spin on traditional Irish songs. “Rocky Road to Dublin” and “Wild Rover” are some of my all-time favorite Irish songs, and their versions are amazing. I also love “Spicy McHaggis Jig”—it’s just fantastic.
What’s the best thing about being in the music video?
Butch: My kids love that I have the Dropkick Murphys tattoo and that it’s in the video. My son was only five when the song came out, but he loved watching the video and singing along to “I’ve got your name written here, In a rose tattoo.”
